Token Board Template: 5 or 10 Tokens
A token board template shows a learner how close they are to a reward. This one has a five token board and a ten token board, a box for the reward and cut-out tokens. It suits parents, teachers and RBTs who want something simple to print today.
Free to print with no account. The customized board also runs on a tablet in a session.
About this template
Both boards in the PDF work the same way: the learner earns a token for each response you have agreed on, sticks it on the board, and trades the full board for the reward written in the top box. The five token board is the usual place to begin. The ten token board is the same board with a longer road to the reward.
How to use it
- Print the PDF and cut out the tokens along the dashed lines. Laminating the board and adding a piece of Velcro to each spot and each token lets the learner place them without help.
- Write or stick the reward in the top box before you start, so the learner can see what the tokens are for.
- Say what earns a token in a few words, for example "quiet hands" or "finished one worksheet", and give the token straight away while the behavior is fresh.
- When the last spot is filled, hand over the reward right away, then clear the board and begin again.
Make it yours
- Use the five token board when you are starting out or when waiting is hard, and move to the ten token board when the learner is succeeding easily.
- Swap the star for something the learner loves by customizing the board, which also lets you pick the token count, color and picture.
- Use a real photo of the reward instead of words if reading is not a strength.
- Run the board on a tablet in a session, where tapping a spot adds a token and finishing the row plays a celebration.
Questions
How many tokens should a token board have?
There is no single right number. Many teams start with a small count so the reward comes quickly, then add tokens as the learner gets used to waiting. The team that knows your learner can choose the count.
Can I print the token board in black and white?
Yes. The board uses dark outlines, so it prints clearly on a black and white printer. Color the stars in yourself if you like.
What is the difference between this and a sticker chart?
A token board is used in the moment: the learner earns a token right after the behavior and trades the full board for a reward soon after. A sticker chart often tracks a whole day or week.
