Reward Choice Board
A reward choice board is a picture menu of things a learner can work for. Instead of guessing what they want today, you let them pick. It pairs well with a token board, which counts up to the reward, and the board is where the choice is made.
Free to print with no account. The customized board also runs on a tablet in a session.
About this template
What a learner wants changes from day to day, and a reward that was exciting last week can fall flat this week. Offering a menu keeps the reward fresh and gives the learner a say. The six here are starting points; the best menu is one built from what your learner actually asks for.
How to use it
- Print the board and replace any picture that does not fit your learner, using the customize button or a pen and a photo.
- Before a work period, show the board and let the learner choose what they would like to work for.
- Write or stick the chosen reward in the top box of a token board, or put the picture where the learner can see it.
- Give the reward when it is earned, and let the learner choose again next time.
Make it yours
- Keep the menu short at first, with just two or three of the learner's favorites.
- Rotate the choices each week so no single reward gets old.
- Add food or activities from the family's own routine, and use photos of the real thing.
- Visit the reward ideas page for more picture-ready ideas by category and load your picks straight into a board.
Questions
Why let the learner choose?
A reward that the learner picks is more likely to be something they want right now. Choosing can also be motivating in itself.
How do I find out what a learner likes?
Watch what they go to on their own, ask the people who know them, and try a few options. Teams sometimes run a formal preference assessment, and your BCBA can do that for you.
Should the rewards be edible?
They can be, but many teams prefer activities and play, which are easier to give in the moment. Follow any dietary or health guidance from your care team.
